Bio

Edwin was thirteen years old when his big sister Cybele told him that they needed to go on a trip, but he could only go if he kept it a secret from everyone.

Excited by the prospect of going somewhere outside his father’s estate, he agreed, and he kept his word. He didn’t even tell mom and dad when Cybele went into their room and took the heavy box off the top shelf of their wardrobe. She said it was really hers anyway, so he guessed it was all right.

They went on a long and frequently boring ride on a wagon, though there were at least some little kids he could play with. What wasn’t fun at all was the bad dreams he started having. Especially because once he started having the bad dreams, the kids didn’t want to play with him anymore. They looked scared of him. This made Edwin very sad.

Cybele hugged him a lot and promised that she would find someone who could make the dreams go away. What she found instead was somebody named Wilton, who showed him how to make ice and vinegar come out of his fingers, and things that were kind of like arrows that never missed. The dreams did start going away after Edwin started learning those things. And it was a lot of fun once he learned the magic that would let him jump off a rooftop and not get hurt.

It was a long, long time – a few birthdays, even – before Cybele came back. Wilton said she had to stay away until Edwin was ready to see her again. Edwin didn’t understand that at all. He was always ready to see his big sister. But she did come back eventually, and Edwin showed her his latest trick of making stuff all sparkly. That wasn’t very fun for her, since some of the sparklies got in her eyes and she couldn’t see for a while, but she hugged him anyway and said it was time to go on another trip, and this time she wouldn’t have to leave him with anyone. He was very happy to hear that.
