Bio
In life, Malak belonged to a tribe of Wanderers, nomads who wandered the argent sands of the Vale. The Wanderers are some of the few who still revere the old gods of the Vale Pantheon, and Malak was called to service as a temple whore. She and her fellows used sanctified sexual union to help teach the divine mystery of the gods’ love for their creations, and to help the faithful cultivate their devotion by serving as a human connection to deity – the people were able to connect with the gods through their intercourse with her. In larger tribes there might have been a specific prostitute priestess for each god revered by the tribesmen, but Malak gladly served them all.
Then twenty years ago, when Malak was 41, the world was invaded by demons. The gods defended their people with all they had, but they had been weakened by generations of “civilized” non-believers dwelling in the great city of the Vale. Many of their faithful were lost in that clash, Malak among them. After the demons had finally been driven off by the non-believer Empress Carawynne and her retinue, Malak spent her days as a direct servant to the gods – usually as a paramour, nourishing the gods directly with the strength of her faith and the emotions that intercourse generates.
Very recently, Einac (god of the sea and of navigation) came to Malak and told her of a grandson she would need to protect. Despite decades of teaching to put the gods’ will before her own, Malak was overjoyed to have the opportunity. Children born to temple whores were always given away to other families (because the temple itself could not be a good family and still perform its other duties adequately), so Malak had never before known a chance to experience those sorts of emotional ties. She became a Spirit Warrior, wielding powerful energy from the sea and sworn to defend her descendant from whatever uncertainty threatens him.
Sadly, Malak finds herself troubled by the alacrity with which she opted to defend Seraph. Having lived her entire young adult and adult life concerned entirely with the well-being of others (divine and mortal), she was taught to downplay or outright ignore her own wants and needs. Feeling a personal connection to her grandson is unsettling when she lets herself think about it.
