Pate was an over-zealous paladin many years ago. He lost favor with his god when he slaughtered helpless goblins. Instead of atoning he turned away from the church and developed feeling of self-hatred and self-pity.

When he is not drowning his sorrows in ale, he will hire himself out to adventuring parties looking for a self-loathing front-line fighter. His only goals now are to be able to afford to keep his ale-mug full without doing too much work.
