Bio
To my wife, Estrine, the fairest of all Silver Elves –
To my shock and delightment, my dear friend Sarmin traipsed into our village to pay me a visit. After years of invitations, it was pleasant to have him as a guest. In case your memory wanes, he is a Green Elf that our people have traded with for many seasons. Being a fellow spiritualist, we shared many similar dreams and naturally became friends. His visit began over three months ago and only ended yesterday.
After a warm meal in the company of the elders, he began explaining the reason for his visit and his quest. The Green Elves have been hit particularly hard by the constant conflict with the Drow; and, their regressive knowledge of the Art is to blame. Sarmin has been charged by the elders in his band to explore outside the forest to research the Art and bring items, artifacts, and records back to the tribe for their study – in hopes to expand their knowledge and help overcome the Drow. Their lack of sorcerers is so desperate, they can’t afford to send one on this quest.
Sarmin is somewhat tall, but much less slight than most. His complexion is a soiled brown – as if he had been rolling around in the dirt too long. The garments he wears are made completely of animal skins and hides. Although he tells me that Green Elves are typically quiet around most non-Elves, he was outright entertaining amongst our folk. There is an instinctive energy about him that permeates those he interacts with. It is a quality that I admire.
Our village was the first stop on his journey. For three months, we enjoyed a rich sharing of knowledge. Sarmin taught our hunters many new skills to improve their efforts. Included, he shared his knack for finding, extracting, and applying natural poisons to aid both the hunt and in defense against the Drow. The yield of venison has nearly doubled since his arrival.
In balance, our warriors taught Sarmin how to use a warrior’s bow in toe-to-toe combat. He was very unused to using a bow in such a manner. Being from such a savage background, he has an aggressive quality that allows him to act quickly, yet opens his defenses. He also has a tendency to keep too much distance from his opponent. Although he told others it is simply because he prefers to dispatch his foes with an arrow from afar, he shared with me in confidence that most Green Elves have a personal space about them which they prefer not to be intruded upon. While interacting with us, he noticed that we tend to enter this space during casual conversation and interaction. Not only does it make him uneasy, I believe it is the same trait that makes him poor at close range combat.
Although he is well versed in the Power of faith, his knowledge of the Arts was lacking. Some of our wizards did their best to train him how to spot Artful items and make records of text. Although he was slow to learn, Sarmin was able to absorb enough concepts to adequately begin his quest.
One morning, I was privy to observe his daybreak ritual. Upon rising from trance at the first glimpse of sun; which he does in a random, secluded, almost hidden space; he speaks with his god, Fenmarel Mestarine – a fitting deity for him with such a solitary soul. This, he does up high on a tree limb, assumingly to be out of the way and wary of unexpected intrusions. His style of prayer includes subtle chanting similar to humming, and gestures that seem almost dance-like. After an hour, he descends the tree and begins foraging in the woods. Among his bounty are berries, nuts, fruits, and fragrant nectars for breakfast, as well as an array of poisonous plants, fungi, bark, and vine extracts to replenish his stock of poisons. Before his breakfast, which he eats quickly yet deliberately, he finds a remote pool to bathe in. Being a part of such a savage society, it’s natural that he prefers to be the observer and not the observed during this and other routines. I was careful not to alert him to my presence.
Sarmin and I enjoyed many enlightening conversations during his visit. Although on the surface we seem like widely different priests, we have realized that our beliefs are rather similar. For example, we both share a focus on the traveling aspect of spirituality and Power. He also shared with me his concern for the Green Elves’ survivability. He claims their penchant for solitude is contributing to their dwindling numbers. The Drow can easily outmatch a small band or pack, which they tend to congregate in. Although against their instincts, he believes their survival is dependant on teamwork and massing larger tribes that stay together. This concept is foreign to the current trend of their society; and even though he is considered a radicalist for suggesting it, there are many that agree with him.
I noticed that Sarmin no longer donned the chain shirt that he had bargained for during one of our trades many springs ago. I explained that it was an exceptional piece of work made by our dear friend and skilled craftsman, Stedd. Being too heavy for him, he later traded it for a similar piece made of wildwood. He further shared with me that his band’s master armorer had begun crafting a glorious breastplate of duskwood specifically for him. During a recent attack by the Drow, a powerful dark Art drained the armorer of his lifeforce. Without an apprentice capable of completing it, the breastplate was given to him unfinished.
Remembering it vividly, I decided to carve a replica of Stedd’s sigil into some blackwood to give to Sarmin. This might help him find Stedd on his journey. If there is one craftsman with the ability to finish such a fine breastplate, it is Stedd.
Before he left, we exchanged gifts. Sarmin gave the hunters a battery of different types of natural poisons. To the wizards and elders, he bestowed countless pelts, hides, and furs. Our bowyer fashioned for him a warrior’s longbow, custom strung for his strength and some utility arrows. The elders gave him a pair of silent shoes. The wizards gave him an ink pen, complete with ink and parchment for him to record his Artful findings. To grant him safe journey, I gifted him a pair of spiritual travel tokens and a fine cloak in which I blessed with several staples of survival – food, water, shelter, and protection from the elements.
With any luck, Sarmin might stumble upon Stedd and his lovely wife, for I have sent him to Cormyr. The most logical place for him to launch his quest fruitfully would be at the Eastkeep with the Seekers. I encouraged him to apply for enrollment and instructed him how to get there.
I also informed him about the value of his poisons, and that they can be traded for gold; and, in turn, that gold can be traded for goods and services he desires. I’m not sure he fully understood this method of commerce, yet I stressed its prevalence and importance in the kingdoms of men.
I hope not too many seasons turn before my new friend pays us another visit.
Your loving husband,
Farel
