Bio
Born among the the Southern People at Dark Water , Wind held a place of respect among his people. His world changed forever on 15 July 1584, when English ships commanded by Amadas and Barlowe, the first of Sir Walter Raleigh’s expeditions to the New World, sighted Hatteras Island. Wind immediately befriended the mission’s scientific illustrator, a man named John White. Wind returned with them to England, along with a more reluctant Indian from the Northern People , called Content Not Found: marten. They spent the winter in Queen Elizabeth’s court. Englishmen trying to pronounce the Algonquian word for “Wind,” montoac, called him “Manteo.” Wind and Marten learned English, and tried to teach their own Algonquian language to Thomas Hariot. They returned in 1585 with Sir Richard Grenville’s fleet, where he met Solomon Kane, a friend of Grenville’s. When they landed, Wind and Marten found their people decimated by strange new diseases. Ralph Lane gained control of the new colony, and began a vicious war against the Indians, eventually killing Suspicious View .
Despite all that happened, Wind remained committed to helping his new English friends, while Marten swore to punish them. Wind returned to England again, and helped plan a new colony with Sir Walter Raleigh and John White, but their pilot, Simon Fernandez , abandoned them at Roanoke. Marten led the remnant of warriors still loyal to Suspicious View, and killed George Howe, driving the new colonists into a panic. John White returned to England, and the colonists retreated to Dark Water, hoping Wind could help them. He could save them from Marten, but not from the greater forces the colonists had begun to gather. The European plagues continued to burn through the Densely Inhabited Land , and in the wake of so much death, the power of the Falling Water Empire grew. The Southern People died in droves, and the empire attacked. They killed Ananias and Eleanor Dare, leaving the baby Virginia entrusted to Wind. He raised her as his own child, even while he and most of the remaining Southern People retreated to find shelter with the Dogsbane People . His adopted daughter found the name “White Doe,” and lived among them. Wind taught her the English language, and something of her people, but the only life she ever knew came from the Dogsbane People.
Then, the empire attacked their village, taking Wind and White Doe, among others, as slaves. White Doe used her powers to escape and raise a war band to free Wind and the rest, but the arrival of Jack Quick, John White and Solomon Kane complicated affairs. Having heard of the kidnapped Falling Water children, Wind accompanied his old friends back to Jamestown, where the scheming Baron de la Warr had them thrown in prison. The baron’s schemes for war quickly faded in importance, however, when they learned that his confidence came from the allegiance his necromantic advisor, Samuell Drake, had arranged with the Snake People . Jack Quick managed to escape, and with Solomon Kane’s help, freed John White and Wind. Wind witnessed Kane’s death, struggling against an abomination unleashed by Drake from some forgotten temple.
