Admiral Jaoquin (J.) Brandice, jr. was given command of the 48th Fleet just prior to the Unification War. When war broke out, Brandice was immediately sent to the Red Sun systems to secure New Melbourne and it’s moons against Browncoat revolt. Brandice overstepped his orders when provoked on Maria and ended up bombing the wealthy, little moon into submission, ransacking it’s stores and banks along the way.
This single act caused the system to rise up and fight back against the Alliance, Brandice having become a symbol for the corruption of the new regime. An entire Browncoat detachment was charged with finding and bringing to justice all members of the 48th responsible.
Revengin’ on Maria turned out to be a long affair and years were spent hunting the 48th, widdling down their numbers in a hundred small ambushes. Eventually the 48th was in tatters and, fearing what would happen if the Browncoats got their hands on the riches of Maria, Brandice took the fleet’s flagship, The Rock of Londinium and high tailed it. The Rock was never found, and neither was Brandice. A legend surrounds the finding of the Rock and the vast treasure stores it must contain.
