We first meet Breen when Duran decides to return to the Middle Redding to compete for the Warrior’s Laurels at the autumn Conclave of the horse tribes. Duran’s oldest brother, Breen would be next in line for chief—with their cousin, Jubal dead – except that their father’s failure to pay the blood-price has left their family disgraced. As a result, Breen will not be permitted to marry his true love, Nadi.
