Bio

Cybele Aroven is the daughter of Lawrence Aroven, an unknown petty baron in the County of Urnst. She has two younger brothers, Edwin and Julian. Edwin is the elder and thus the heir to daddy’s estate, which is a problem because Edwin is a half-wit. This is ascribed to a curse laid on Lawrence1 by the lover he spurned in favor of his wife.

Julian, on the other hand, is quite intelligent and capable, and one evening Cybele was walking down the hallway to her bedroom when she overheard her parents talking about taking Edwin out of the picture and setting up Julian as the heir to the estate. In Cybele’s mind, “taking Edwin out of the picture” meant that her father planned to kill him. Two weeks later, during the Harvest Festival, she ransacked her hope chest and stole the coffer containing her eventual dowry. She grabbed Edwin and traded the contents of her hope chest in exchange for passage and secrecy aboard a traveling caravan.

Her time with the caravan taught her basic “roguish” skills, though she still retains some of her noble upbringing and prefers diplomacy and guile as a first resort. She traveled far away, and during the journey Edwin began to show the first disturbing signs of having the sorceror’s touch. Caught between having to calm other peoples’ fears and fight her own, Cybele began looking for someone who could take in her little brother and somehow teach a half-wit to control such a dangerous gift.

Eventually such a teacher was found, and Cybele took to the adventuring life – partly to keep her father’s attention focused on her rather than looking elsewhere for Edwin, and partly because it took nearly all of the money she’d stolen to hire Edwin’s new mentor. She ended up settling in the Bandit Kingdoms, hoping that life in such a dangerous land would mean her father would never come looking for her or for Edwin. Eventually she received word that Edwin had finally gained mastery over himself and his gift, and that it was safe to integrate him back into “the real world”. Cybele went promptly to retrieve him, and the two adventure together now.

1 What nobody realizes is that the family’s curse was lain upon the first-born son…and that Edwin was not the first-born son. Cybele was supposed to have been a boy, but was turned into a girl by the curse. Edwin’s mental retardation is due to a wholly mundane case of the measles contracted by his mother during pregnancy.
