Lifesword
A Crystal Sword Powered by Life Energy
Author: viz
Category: weapon (melee)
Game System: D&D (3.5)
Is Public?: Yes
Is Visible?: Yes
Description
The translucent blade of this longsword appears crafted from a jewel similar to a diamond and, when held to the light, glows a brilliant white. The blade is so sharp that a sheet of parchment dropped upon the edge would likely be sliced in half. A pommel of silvery metal wrapped with red leather fits over one end of the blade. The name INGRINAL is etched upon the blade near the pommel.
The Lifesword taps into the life energy of its wielder to produce powerful effects. However, these effects can only be unlocked by learning particular information about the sword or performing great deeds. This prevents spells such as Identify from divining all the secrets of the sword at once.
An Identify spell will reveal the total number of Ranks, Key Knowledges, and Deeds, as well as the description of the Key Knowledges or Deeds associated with Rank 1. When all Key Knowledges or Deeds for Rank 1 are accomplished, the Rank 1 Effect is activated. Then another Identify spell will reveal the description of the Key Knowledges or Deeds for Rank 2. When all Key Knowledges or Deeds for Rank 2 are accomplished, the Rank 2 Effect is activated. This procedure continues until all the Effects are activated.
A Detect Magic spell finds an aura of overwhelming strength that includes the Abjuration, Evocation, Transmutation, and Necromancy schools.
When unactivated, the sword performs as a simple +1 weapon. Activation requires an infusion of the wielder’s blood, and unlocks greater powers at the cost of continued blood expenditures.
Some Ranks are not completed because Jager Cull, the character in the Kith’takharos campaign who possesses the Lifesword, has not yet learned them.
Rank 1
Key Knowledge. The wielder must learn how to activate the Lifesword. This information is gained when an Identify spell is first cast upon the Lifesword. However, the Name of the sword is not revealed.
Deed. The wielder must activate the Lifesword. This does not require knowing the sword’s Name, but does cost 5 Hit Points of Permanent damage.
Effect. The blade of the Lifesword gains a faint reddish hue after activation. The Lifesword now adds +2 to the wielder’s Willpower Save. In addition, at a cost of 3 Hit Points damage, the Lifesword acts as a +2 weapon for 6 rounds. This damage can be healed normally.
Rank 2
Key Knowledge. The wielder must learn the Name of the Lifesword.
Effect. The Lifesword now adds +3 to the wielder’s Willpower Save.
Rank 3

Backstory
Marek ir’Sharel acquired the Lifesword for his collection in 830 YK from an illegal seller of antiquities. He believed that a Cyran King had wielded the sword before the founding of Galifar, though he had no proof beyond hope.
