Nicole Matthews

An unwitting, and later unwilling, guardian of a dark power even the gods themselves fear.

Nicole Matthews

Author: FemmeLegion

PC in: Encyclopedia Yggdraversica

Race: Human

Level:

Game System: Scion: Hero

Is Public?: Yes

Is Visible?: Yes

Description

NB: The DM called for one character to be the “normal”, someone absolutely unaware of his/her divine heritage when the campaign began (and indeed, it was months before Nicole learned anything). He also said that the “normal” would only have half the normal number of dots for Attributes, and would not start the game with any Epic attributes, Boons, or Birthrights of any sort. Those sorts of things would be picked up later, and would not always be at the player’s option. FemmeLegion jokes that Nicole is a half-NPC.

The following reflects some things picked up with experience points.

Attributes (given in dots, none Epic to start with):

Strength 2, Dexterity 2, Stamina 2, Epic Stamina 1

Charisma 3, Manipulation 2, Appearance 2, Epic Appearance 1

Perception 2, Intelligence 1, Wits 3

Skills (only ones with dots listed):

Academics 2, Animal Ken 2, Art (Puppet Theatre) 2, Athletics 1, Awareness 3, Brawl 3, Command 1, Control (Auto) 1, Craft (Cooking) 2, Empathy 3, Fortitude 1, Integrity 1, Marksmanship 1, Medicine 1, Occult 2, Presence 2, Science 2, Stealth 1

Other: Legend 4, Willpower 4, Virtues Duty (1), Loyalty (3), Order (1) Endurance (0)

Custom Powers:

- Able to boost any one Attribute to 5 dots for one scene. May not change chosen Attribute until the next scene. There is no Legend point cost associated with this.

- Able to mentally scry the location of anyone whom she has met before, and teleport herself (just herself) to that location. There is no Legend point cost associated with this.

- Able to summon swarms of junebug- or scarab-like insects. They burst out from under the skin on her arms, and swarm to devour a designated target to death. NB: Nicole is deathly afraid of such insects, but she will use this power in self-defense, especially against targets that are obviously not…mundane. This costs 4 Legend points.

- Unmaking. A single targeted item, person, OR DEITY not only ceases to exist, but never existed to begin with. Note that observers will still remember the unmade target, and if the target directly affected something else which is being observed at the time of Unmaking, those effects may remain. EXAMPLE: Nicole Unmade a bullet that had mortally wounded one of her friends. It caused the sucking chest wound to go away, but there were still powder burns on his chest and a hole in his shirt.

Nicole is even more afraid of this power than she is of the insects. She was a bit cavalier with using it early on when she was still discovering herself, but she is finally gaining a serious appreciation for all its consequences (think the last bits of “It’s a Wonderful Life”), and she WILL NOT use this power if there is even a remote chance of there being any other way to handle the situation. This costs 4 Legend points.

Boons:

Night Eyes (Darkness 1) – assigned by GM

Vigil Brand (Guardian 1) – purchased by player

Knacks:

Solipsistic Well-Being

Center of Attention

Birthrights:

Black Locket (3 dots) – assigned by GM; player has no idea what it does other than prompt her to dream about past lives

Bio

Nicole Matthews

27, female

Work: Housewares section at a Nordstrom’s in Chicago, also does volunteer work at the public library on weekends reading stories to kids.

Social: Single, off-and-on boyfriend. No kids, but one pregnancy scare with said boyfriend. Has a couple of friends through work and one from library; the latter is fond of throwing bunco parties. Nicole goes, and it’s not too bad, though she’s usually the youngest one there and everyone talks about grandbabies. She also has a handful of e-mail pals she met through Yahoo! Answers (where she spends significant chunks of time as snarkbabe289).

Family: (Adoptive) Parents are together, and she’s on good terms with both of them. Dad’s a luxury auto mechanic (still working), and Mom works part time in a craft store to support her scrapbooking habit. Nicole still regrets ever getting her that digital camera, because Mom just won’t shut the damn thing off whenever she’s over to visit. Mom frets that Nicole dropped out of college after her sophomore year; Dad somehow became convinced Nicole is a lesbian because one of her work friends is a lesbian. (Nicole knows the latter, but not the former.)

Life Before Campaign: Has a studio apartment in the River North district (Kinsey & LaSalle); it strains her budget a bit, but she doesn’t trust any of the other less expensive neighborhoods, and previous bad experiences mean she doesn’t want to put anyone else on the lease unless she’s married to them. Drives a rather old BMW (bought so she could take it to Dad for low-cost maintenance). Enjoys cooking, but not enough to buy the high-quality expensive gear, and dines out on a regular basis ‘cause it’s just such a pain in the butt cooking for one and she doesn’t have much freezer space. Watches a lot of TV and Netflix movies ‘cause it’s cheap entertainment. Shares the pandemic attitude that there really ought to be something more to life, but damned if she knows what it is – and even if she knew, she probably couldn’t afford it.

Life During Campaign: Found herself in strange and dire enough circumstances to realize that her little jaunt to the desert was not going to be a one-time experience, or a short-lived development. During the few brief respites of “down time”, Nicole found herself needing to quit her job, transfer the lease on her apartment, and effectively email everyone she cared about to tell them that she would probably not see them again for a long time, if ever.

Perpetually slow to make friends or trust anybody, it has taken (in-game) weeks of war-buddy bonding and a couple of very significant personal events for Nicole to consider reaching out to any of her traveling companions as real friends. Each new manifestation of her power has brought a fresh bout of angst and panic – having been raised Methodist, the ideas of omnipotence and omniscience are inextricable to her, and it scares her that she could have immense power without immense knowledge/wisdom to go with it.
