Trollwood becomes brittle and useless if normal gathering techniques and working techniques are used to work it. In order for it to retain the properties of the living plant, Trollwood must be cut and shaped by use of a Shape Wood spell or with axes and saws dipped in a special alchemical preparation (DC 15, 10gp market value, good for approximately one day’s work). Items crafted in that manner retain the properties above indefinitely, and treat their worked form as their natural form.
If even a few inches of a trollwood object remain, it will eventually regrow into the full item, making it especially prized for staffs, spears, and other melee weapons made largely of wood. Bows and crossbows made of Trollwood are especially fearsome, as the properties of trollwood prevent warping or cracking in the wood – leading to a 50% increase in the range increment of such weapons.
Larger structures and objects can be made of Trollwood, but the expense of supplying all laborers with the alchemical treatment for their tools or hiring druids makes these projects extremely rare and expensive.
