I discovered Dungeons and Dragons by purchasing a box full of books and miniatures from some guys at a flea market. I was only 11 at the time and thought the pictures and minis were cool. I think the guy who owned the lot thought it was cool that my parents had no clue what I was looking at and let me have it all for $5.
The box then sat in my room for about a year with me occasionally opening the books to flip through the pages. Then, one day, I actually started to read the Dungeon Masters Guide and understand the rules of the game.
It wasn’t long before I organized a group of kids to the neighborhood to create some 1st level characters and adventure in a world built of Legos and inspired by popular Squaresoft games.
I’m now an adult, married, and still getting together to roll dice as often as I can. I no longer have the Legos and I’ve moved onto more original stories, but the thrill is the same. Currently, I am playing a biweekly D&D 4e at a gaming shop in Apex.
