I’ve been a game master for 33 years. My first game used the original classic D&D boxed set + Greyhawk expansion + the AD&D Monster Manual (the Players Handbook and Dungeonmasters guide were yet to come). Since then I have run many different campaigns using many different systems. My favorites:
- Runequest – I ran a campaign in Dragon Pass with the addition of the Thieves World city of Sanctuary. The final battle was the players against an insane dwarf warlord on a giant stone warship!
- Call of Cthulhu – Didn’t run a campaign so much as a series of sporadic adventures – the player characters have a tendency to die or go insane after a couple of adventures. One of my favorite role-playing sessions ever involved me actually scaring the daylights out of the players in a haunted house.
- Fifty Fathoms (Savage Worlds system) – The best campaign I have ever run. We played all the way through to the defeat of the Sea Hags. I even built a giant paper craft three masted sailing ship (WorldWorks games) for the players! Towards the end the players had created such great characters the campaign practically ran itself.
