Encourage Players to Contribute to the Campaign by Offering In-Game Rewards

If your Players aren’t contributing as much as you would like to the Campaign, consider appealing to their power-craving-goblin-brain by offering them some in-game rewards.

1) Create a Wiki Page in your Campaign and name it Contribution Points.

2) Add a list of the rewards your Players can claim with their Contributions Points. See the Potential Rewards list below for some suggestions.

3) Add a list of the contributions your Players can make to earn their Contribution Points. See the Potential Rewardable Contributions list below for some suggestions.

If you’re concerned that the rewards will make your encounters too easy for the PCs, then just pump up the opponents a little bit to compensate. Give the opponents a bit more armor, damage, or hit points, for example.

Potential Rewards

  • Automatic skill check success on one check
  • Automatic save check success on one save
  • Immediately shake off one temporary condition
  • Automatic dodge vs one hit against you, so the hit turns into a miss
  • +20 to hit on one attack
  • Double damage on one attack that hits
  • Re-roll one dice roll and keep whichever roll you prefer
  • Recharge a daily-use ability once
  • Heal 50% once
  • Recharge a daily-use magic item once
  • Take an additional action on your turn once
  • Turn a regular hit into a critical hit once
  • Take a heroic action (like from a show or movie), and have a 50% chance it succeeds
  • Increase the strength of a relationship with a henchman, animal companion, or mount one degree for the entire game session
  • Increase one ability score by 1 point for the entire game session
  • Character gets lucky and stumbles onto some gold between sessions
  • Enable an ally to do any of the above in your place

If you come up with any others we should have on the list, email them to support, and we’ll add them in.

If you want to really motivate your Players, consider allowing them to earn and bank multiple Contribution Points at a time across sessions, and to spend multiple Contribution Points at a time in one session to stack the rewards.

For example, a Player might choose to use “+20 to hit” to insure a hit, and then “Turn a regular hit into a critical hit”, and then “Double damage on one attack that hits”, all on the same attack to insure a large amount of damage all at once to one opponent. That combo would cost 3 Contribution Points, which means the Player would have already made 3 contributions to the Campaign to be able to afford that one heroic action.

This could also be used as a way to enable a Player to get temporary access to something that wouldn’t normally be available at their level. For example, a PC could find a hippogriff that is normally “slightly hostile” to the PC, but if the PC spends two Contribution Points in a session to “Increase the strength of a relationship with a mount” twice to “slightly friendly”, then the PC can have a hippogriff mount that session. And if the Player wants to keep having that mount each session, the Player would need to keep contributing to the Campaign.

Something similar could be done with a magic item that has powers that are only recharged with Contribution Points.
