I am of the breed of GM that believes that the rules should be followed, though in no case should they become a straight jacket. Almost any rules has one that abridges it, or allows for a get around, you simply have to think about how it could be possible within the rules. By this measure, I never fudge, I’m not going to save a character if the dice say you’re dead, but I’m also not going to reroll magic items because they’re “too powerful”. If they are highly powerful, then there will be powerful people in the world that might want to relieve you of them, good neutral or evil.
