Without completely giving away my advanced age, I started playing AD&D in the summer of ‘81 as a kid. I bought the Monster Manual as my very first book because the pictures were cool. I was playing in a game with some older kids and I knew even then that it was the most ridiculous thing for everyone to have copies of Excalibur but it was super fun and I immediately fell in love with it. I got the red box, Basic D&D and all of the AD&D supplements and quickly started to DM because that was the only way I was going to be able to play after that summer ended. I got turned on to Runequest as a system that had no classes and D&D was forever under fire from then on. I still played a lot of AD&D but we played other games as well. Does anybody even remember some of these? Villains & Vigilantes, Gamma World, Star Frontiers,Traveller, Talislanta, Palladium, Champions? How bad am I dating myself here? When I got turned on to Champions, I quickly realized it could be turned into a fantasy game even though it was designed for Supers: Thor, Dr. Strange, etc. Apparently I wasn’t the only one with this thought because I found a supplement for Fantasy Hero even before they made it a universal system, the Hero System. My first Hero System book is in complete structural decay. I ran a game from that for easily 6 years through high school and college. I also played in a very influential Harn game that changed the way I saw RPGs from then on.
When I went off to school, I played in an Everway game for a couple of years that was super cool. When I moved to my current location, I lost the chance to game for many years. Since then I’ve joined a D&D 3.5 game that I’ve been playing in for 3 or 4 years now but only once a month or so and I’ve just started a new game with some friends who’ve never played before. I’m not sure I could list all of the systems that I’ve played, but I’ll try my best:
Basic D&D, AD&D, D&D 3.5, Runequest, Role Master, Call of Cthulhu (RQ version), V&V, Gammaworld, Star Frontiers, Top Secret, Ars Magica, Palladium, Traveller, Talislanta, Champions & Hero System through several editions, Amber, Deadlands, FUDGE, Harn, Everway, Paranoia, Shadowrun (d6), Earthdawn, Hero Quest (and now that my memory is failing me, I’ll go to the lists and see if I see any I’ve forgotten), Jorune, Warhammer, In Nomine, Continuum, Vampire Masquerade, Mage Ascension and Werewolf Apocalypse before they were all joined together, Alternity, Fading Suns, Star Wars (d6), Beyond the Supernatural, Nephilim, GURPS Modern, Heros Unlimited and TMNT, Marvel, Feng Shui, and that’s all I could find in the wikipedia list. Who knows really. I remember playing in a great Space 1889 game, but I’m pretty sure the GM mocked it up using the FUDGE Engine instead of the game proper. We’ve had lots of games like that over the years. Most of these we made characters, tried a handful of games, laughed and moved on. Definitely my most played-in games are AD&D, D&D 3.5, Runequest, Harn, and Everyway. My most GM’d games are AD&D, Runequest, and Champions/Hero.
As for other things besides gaming (whu?), I like macs and the few video games you can play on them including a bad addiction to World of Warcraft. I love reading and watching movies. I don’t like TV unless I can get it on DVD, 12 hours a time with no commercials. Netflix is my new crack. I’ve actually never painted a miniature before (but I’ve had some painted for me over the years – thanks guys) and I’m going to start soon. I also like karate and the out-doors. Finally, don’t ask me about math unless you’re willing to listen to way more of it than most people have the sanity to bear. And that’s all I have to say about that.
