“One day you will tell a story about your life. Every decision you make today will determine the story you tell tomorrow. Live a story that’s worth telling.”
My Name is Jason Heilpern, and I am a Geek. I am 31 years old, and love Star Wars, Star Trek, & Star Gate. I read comic books, love Firefly, and play Dungeons and Dragons. I have LARPed, Cosplayed, and been to more conventions then I can count. I have played Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. Bottom line…I am a Geek and a Gamer.
This is my story…
For some people they must hit rock bottom before they can find the strength to climb their way out. I was one of those people. On April 1, 2009 my world came crashing down around me. The details are long, but the bottom line is this, I woke up. For the first time in many years I saw who I had truly become. I weighed close to 300lbs. I was a heavy smoker, and could easily do two packs a day. My diet consisted of fast food, and soda, and often would make several trips to Burger King a day. I had no passion for anything in life. My days consisted of getting up, going to work, coming home, watching TV, going to sleep, and repeating the process all over.
When I woke up and realized I needed to change I was alone. My wife and I were separated, and I really didn’t have any friends. I had no idea how to get healthy, but I knew I needed to change. My first choice was to give up drinking and smoking cold turkey. I had tried to quit before, but this time was different. This time I knew I had to change, and so I promised myself I would not fail. Quitting smoking was one of the hardest choices I have ever made. The next few weeks were difficult to say the least, but one day clean turned into two, and two turned into 4. Each day I woke up excited to see my number of days clean grow. Today, as I write this, I am proud to say I am 1,421 days without a smoke or a drink.
Loosing weight and getting into shape was another challenge I faced. I had no experience, no support group, and only the faintest idea of what to do. There was a local running trail near my house, and on April 2, 2009 I found myself there with an old pair of tennis shoes on. Considering how heavy I was, and the years of smoking running was out of the question. So I walked. Everyday I was at the trail walking, and eventually walking turned into jogging, and jogging turned into running. I can still remember the day months later that I was able to run 3 miles without stopping. I am pretty sure I freaked out several people on the trail that day as I was whooping and hollering, while doing a strange happy dance.
As my stamina with running increased I found other interests in fitness including P90X, weight lifting, Crossfit, Yoga, and group exercise. Suddenly I was becoming passionate about fitness, health, and nutrition, and I felt a fire start burning inside of me that I had never felt before. As my passion for fitness increased my weight began to drop. Within 9 months I lost over 70lbs. I felt better then I could ever remember, but I wasn’t done changing yet.
Throughout most of my weight loss and fitness journey I had been alone. I never had a support system, and I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I knew there were people out there struggling with the same things I had. People who desperately wished for support, a community, a family they could be a part of. I decided then I wanted to create that family. So I began studying and learning everything I could about fitness, nutrition, and health. Within a year I was a certified Personal Trainer, and in January of 2012 Geek and Gamer Fitness opened its doors.
Now I teach group fitness classes, nutrition seminars, and coach online clients. Its my #1 goal to help Geek and Gamer Fitness and The Fit Freak Nation grow.
